June 2021 News and Notes

Our June meeting will be Tuesday, June 15th at Noon at the Out-O-Town Club in Kaukauna or via Microsoft Teams. The topic this month is a pre-recorded presentation from Shane Toven. He recorded it last month for the Alabama Engineering Association and will be explaining the process of converting a radio studio to IP.

May 2021 News and Notes

May Meeting

Our May meeting will be Tuesday, May 18th at Noon at the Out-O-Town Club in Kaukauna or via Microsoft Teams (link in the newsletter). Our presenter will be Phil Larsen, Vice President of Airborne Division – QForce. QForce is using drone technology to help stations with all sorts of RF requests and needs. Focusing primarily on broadcast measurements that were, for a long time, very tough to get without current drone technology.

About QForce and Phil Larsen – Phil Larsen has exceptional industry experience in the Commercial Construction, Broadcast/Telecommunication and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV’s) and business development as a proven business leader, but is considered one of the foremost experts in these industries. Phil has worked for DoD, NSA, CIA, Navy and other governmental agencies in multiple capacities and most recently consulted numerous country and military leaders on strategic applications in internal security measures via UAVs. As the Vice President of QForce the Airborne Division of QCommunications and is leading the RF collection via drones globally.

December 2020 News and Notes

Our December program will be presented by Brian Walker, Business Development Manager, Professional Audio for Sennheiser Electronic Corporation. The topic is Digital Wireless Microphone Theory. Sennheiser is also providing the Zoom Meeting platform this month. The link will be sent out by end of day Monday, December 14th to registered members of Chapter 80. Once again, if you are receiving this newsletter and you are not a member of Chapter 80 but would like to join the meeting, please send an email to Bill Hubbard with your request.

FYI – Our January program will be presented by Benjamin Nemser and Daniel Ritts of Nemal Electronics. The topic will be Fiber Optics in HD, AV and Broadcast. Stay tuned for more info on that in next month’s newsletter.

November 2020 Chapter News And Notes

November Meeting

Our November program will be presented by Doug Ferber, VP Sales, and Jacob Daniluck, Tech Sales Expert, of Tieline. The theme for the presentation will be “Remote Broadcasting Connections: Trends and Suggestions”. As an added treat, since Tieline cannot buy lunch due to our pandemic induced online meeting, attendees will be entered into a drawing for an Amazon gift card. Tieline will be hosting the online Zoom platform for this meeting and Bill Hubbard will be sending out the connection information before the meeting to registered members of the chapter. Once again, if you are receiving this newsletter, are not a member of Chapter 80 but would like to join the meeting, please send an email to Bill Hubbard with your request.

Chapter Elections

We have a slate of officers proposed on the ballot and room to write in a candidate if you wish. Here is some brief background information:

For Chair – Martin Jury
Martin currently serves as the Director – Network Operations for Relevant Radio.  He is the current Vice Chair of SBE Chapter 80 and the recipient of our 2020 Chapter Engineer of the Year.

For Vice Chair – Matt Converse, CBT, CRO
Matt is the Corporate Engineer for Results Broadcasting based in Shawano.  Matt currently serves as Chapter 80 Secretary.  

For Secretary – Eric Papenfuss, CBNE
Eric has recently accepted a Broadcast Network Engineer / Network Specialist position with Wisconsin Public Radio and is based in the Town of Rome.

For Treasurer – Steve Brown, CPBE, CBNT
Steve is a Charter Member of Chapter 80 and has served as Chair (twice) and is our current Treasurer.  He is the Director of Engineering for Woodward Radio.  Steve is a member of the SBE National Board of Directors, our Chapter Liaison, and a past winner of the Chapter 80 Engineer of the Year award.

Instructions for returning your completed ballot are included on the ballot form. Please note the deadline is NOON on Tuesday, November 17th. Ballots must be RECEIVED by that time. Thank you to Tim Laes for serving as our election teller this year.

Marty Jury 2020 Chapter Engineer of the Year

SBE Chapter 80 recognizes Martin Jury as our Chapter Engineer of the Year.

Martin currently serves as the Director – Network Operations for Relevant Radio, Inc. in Green Bay, WI. In that role he is responsible for the day to day operation of all Relevant Radio Network studios. He coordinates all operations for live and special broadcasts on the network. His other major responsibilities include Assisting the Global Digital Team in online streaming broadcasts, evaluating future station acquisitions and spectrum analysis, and serving as the Project Manager for the Chicago Network studio and Chicago Stations studio build out. He has been a huge part of Relevant Radio starting from the beginning of 1 radio station to the current 103 owned and operated stations. His latest undertaking has been switching the network over to the X-Digital/XDS satellite platform for all affiliates. Martin currently serves as the Vice-Chair of SBE Chapter 80.
